Tax in California kills the deal. B&H still works better

Just a PSA, Newegg is a joke and if you just bought this NAS like I did a week ago they won't do a pricematch and will instead offer a $20 "courtesy credit"

I'd like to build on myself, but I have a hard time finding a case like these NAS ones for a decent price.

This is expensive, DIY + Xpenology much better value if you are little handy
I'm trying to decide between buying a Synology and just building a NAS and it looks like a Synology is a better deal. They are a little (10-20%) more expensive than a mini-ITX rig, but mini-ITXes are larger, and there is a lot of unknowns: air ventilation, noise level, Linux support for thermal sensors. It's just not worth it.

Can someone explain why Synology is expensive?

Couldn't you just build a computer like an HTPC for cheaper? Are you paying the extra $100s for the "Synology program" (syncing, backup, playback)

You could, and you can, and you are, however! Sometimes it's nice just buying a 'set it and forget it' type system. These things are solid, let you have flexibility, and don't have to worry about most issues. That's what you're paying for. Toss some drives in, click through a wizard, an you're done.

Software is top notch. Hardware is reliable. My cheap DS212j is still running no problems. It's old and slow, but it has had zero failures or downtime in 5 years.

When I considered to build a NAS, I had same question. Yes, you can build your own storage system. But, to run properly, you will spend many hours to configure and maintain the system. Buying a QNAP or Synology, you only focus on your data. I went to Synology 1817+ 16gb with 10Gb. And I am happy about my decision.

I like synology stuff but needs to be more than a 5% discount to be hot.

Huh, good deal if you can get it with no sales tax. That's less than I paid for my DS916+ (8GB) a year ago. Doesnt look like it's worth upgrading to for me though.
