Agreed! Love that it has IFTTT and Alexa support. So tempted, but worried about getting false positives and having to constantly adjust it.

And WOW! Look what folks are saying in the merchant reviews! [amazon.com] They brick your device if you complain? What? Must be more to the story. UPDATE: It's actually true, in that the founder childishly disabled one angry customer's device, and promised never to do it again [mashable.com].

If you can get past that, and the complaints, then you have to get past these kind of comments from Newegg reviews, which tend to be more tech savvy:

This device works by shooting little laser pulse towards the garage door and detecting the light bouncing off of it. You need to affix a circular reflective tape on the door so the device will see the light bouncing off. However, the aim of the device keeps on shifting due to the tape adhesive and probably from vibration of the motor.. so often times, the device reports the door is open even when it's closed. This is an issue because it's one of the biggest selling points.

The "company" seems like a pretty low rent operation. It's a cool device but there are some concerns with security and the software involved is not very solid. Lots of problems with losing connection, false alerts, crashing and just general bugginess across the board.

My garage door's top row has windows and since it is east facing, sun lights in the morning triggered a lot of false open/close notifications while the garage door was not operated on at all. Some adjustments to the setting fixed the problem.

This poor developer has been having some heartaches from non-technical buyers at another major retail site. Don't buy into them. Use your "egg" knowledge and know that with all technology, you have to have at least some understanding of how things work. If you don't know how to wire up a light switch or outlet, then finding and connecting the wires to your garage door may take some learning. Don't fret though, once you're done it works great!

The device is offered with 30 days satisfaction guarantee if you to try it for yourself. Mine never needed the adjustment during its year in service. Just follow the installation instructions (find flat clean surface etc).

As for security, it's implemented by the underlying Particle Platform [particle.io] with encryption, identity checks, fast-rotating session keys and all the good stuff.
