Different item, but I REI's Flash 18 daypack -- which usually goes on sale for $20 or less (retail is $40 tho). Super light and rolls up, but very little padding or shoulder support, but works well for a jacket + water + snacks: https://www.rei.com/product/89207...sh-18-pack

What does the chest strap do? I thought it looked dorky (not hating) so I took mine off but I still have it.

The chest strap helps distribute some of the load weight to onto your chest.

It also keeps the backpack adjusted in place so you don't need to keep adjusting it manually.

It doesn't look the greatest, but you won't look that great with back/shoulder/posture issues.

If you are talking about a strap on the chest that goes between the shoulder straps, it distributes the weight of the bag so that weight isn't all on your shoulders, or it keeps the shoulder straps stay in the places so that shoulder straps no longer moving around? Maybe?

I know a strap on the waist area keeps the weight of the bag distributed so that it's not all on your shoulders.

actually folks, what a sternum(chest) strap does is pull the shoulder straps in so the straps arent so far out on your shoulders. this transfers the weight to your body better, and also allows you to have more movement in your arms. it doesn't do any transferring of weight to your chest.

chest straps keep the sholder straps in place more toward your core so that you don't have to pull the sholder straps so tight to keep the load in place. But this is only a light weight pack, the usage of the strap isn't for weight transfer so much as well as it is to possibly keep the straps in position.

Way too small for a chest strap lest your using it to pick flywheels at a junk yard.
