Synology DS918+ NAS DiskStation, Diskless, 4-bay; 4GB DDR3L price is lowered to $549.99 at Amazon.com.

You can also purchase direct from Synology through Amazon Marketplace which may lower your total price (no tax) although they charge a small shipping fee ($16.42 for me in Ca).

These are more than just file servers anymore. They can run virtual machines, transcode videos, serve linux sessions over remote desktop, and anything else you can think of to do with a Linux server.
