What do they have in them now? Isn't it some sort of proprietary USB connector instead of a sas/sata to USB controller?

Yes, it spun slow, thus data rate is lower in Read/Write.

Would this be any good to pull the bare drive out for gaming? No mention on RPM but I'm assuming they're mostly a 5400rpm Green?
My 2TB 7200 RPM drive is full and I'm currently uninstalling games to add new ones. :-(

It a small daughter board adapter screws into them and it removable.

I've pulled only red and blues out of the 4gb. All reds out of the 8gbs.

They got rid of Green a couple years ago, they were the same as Blue so they just kept the Blue line. I've picked up 3x 6TB 7200 RPM Blues on eBay. All like new (with warranty) for under $120. You should give that a shot.
