i've seen this lower at amazon but ended up buying the costco version.

winix c535 which is the costco equivalent of one of these currently $99 until 10.22.17 and includes close to 2year supply of filters.

I believe the C535 is equivalent to the 5300-2 and the C555 is equivalent to the 5500-2. The C555 and 5500-2 both have the Washable AOC Carbon Filter.

Right now the C555 is $230 at Costco so getting the 5500-2 for $136 seems like a good deal.

I grabbed one of these about a month ago for the same price. It's really been working well around so I grabbed another for the 2nd floor.

As a side note, the 5300-2 is at $133 right now so for a few dollars more you get the remote and washable filter. Good deal.

YMMV but the power button to my TV remote increases the Fan speed on this and the Mute button decreases the fan speed, pretty annoying. Otherwise, an excellent product.

So functionally what is this difference between this and the $100 Costco model? Is it just the washable filter?

The 535 is the 5300 + the remote that normally just comes with the 5500. The difference between the 535 and the 5000 is just the washable carbon filter. Personally, I would save my money and go with the Costco model as it's $30 cheaper and comes with an additional HEPA filter which would normally cost $25, so you're basically getting the 5500 at 33% off.

As far as the washable filter that comes with the 5500 goes, it's not a lifetime filter, it has to be replaced every year, so you're really not going to be saving money there. The carbon filter's not gonna do much of anything except help get the smell out of the house a little quicker after you fry fish or something. Most of the replacement HEPA filters on Amazon come with 4 replaceable carbon filters anyway.

I believe the C535, 5300-2, C555, and 5500-2 all have the same functionality. The C555 and 5500-2 just have washable filter and remote.

Eventually I figure you will make up the cost of the replacing those filters vs washing them with the higher end models.

Why not just vacuum the filters? I do every 2 to 3 months. The dirtiest is the carbon filter. I find the HEPA usually stays clean.

function-wise and coverage area are the same.

there is a remote included in the c535 i got from costco. i dont know if it should come with a remote but it's in the box.

im actually getting another one this weekend and with the extra free filters (i.e. i believe the washable ones are more expensive, if they're even available to buy) and costco's incredible return policy (i.e. as i've read that there are cases where winix motors start making noise after a while), imo this is the best bang for the buck among the choices right now.

Do things like this consume a lot of power? I got a similar model and wasn't sure.

Does anyone just tape a filter to a box fan? I'm pretty poor.

What's Costco's return policy on these? Aren't they just covered by the 90-day electronics allowance?

No, no one does that.
