Routers and Modems

60 18 October 20, 2017 at 09:12 AM
I currently have the Motorola SB6121 modem and D-LINK DIR-601 router, but I need to upgrade since I'm moving to 300 MBPS. Grande recommends DOCSIS 3.0 with 24x8 channel setup, and 802.11ac for router.

Any recommendations? I live in a 2,600 sq. ft. house which has a game room upstairs with a PS4. The office is on the other side of the house so I need something that has good reach.

My current setup goes in and out of range quiet often and it can't keep up - I often have to disconnect and reconnect to wifi and restart the modem.

I hear Orbi is good but it's $300-450 which is pretty high, plus I would need to buy a modem. I'm still considering it, but any other suggestions?

Thats a great modem at a great price IMO that will outperform your max speeds (Arris bought Motorola's business). You could spend more but it would be overkill for your setup.

I'll get flamed for this but I love my Apple Timecapsule router. Solid and stable signal. Almost never has to be reset. I've had it for years and never had an issue.

Thanks! Is that enough channels (16x4) - Grande recommends 24 channels down / 8 channels up, or is that overkill?

Also, what router would you combine this with? I think the router might be the most important item so my wifi can reach all over the house.

I actually just checked and I have this exact one. I'm getting about 250gb down out
I think I only pay for the 150 service so I'm probably maxing out the connection. Good part is if you buy from Walmart they take anything back so buy it and run a speed test.

I'm not much help w routers. I have a Time Capsule like I mentioned. It's super solid and my speeds are great. I don't think most people would drop 300 on a router w a hard drive built in but it backs up my MacBooks automatically so I'm sticking with it.
