weird - website seems buggy. I could add it to my cart, but couldn't checkout.
if youre interested in the echo or Alexa products its best to just buy the new one... Otherwise there is a decent reason to buy these but figured if give anyone the heads up

Thanks. I'm on the fence. I mostly just want to try the Sonos system out to see if my wife would like it. She wants to listen to music and npr in the kitchen. Is Sonos 1 technically less supported than the newer ones?
Is there any drawback to just buying one of these then getting an echo dot to control it?
For voice control, it locks you into whatever you can access through Alexa. Sonos has indicated future Google and Airplay functionality with the new speaker.

she will love them and they will be supported the same. if you are initially buying into it, it makes way more sense to get it combined rather than buying a dot to go with it which bring you about the same price

No, Sonos updates all of their products and haven't orphaned any yet.
The only reason not to get this one would be pairing. If you think in the future you would buy the Sonos 1 speaker (which is basically a Play 1 with voice), and wanted to use them in stereo, you would not be able to pair this one to that one. However, you could still set them up as separate zones.
Supposedly, the sound quality is the same on the play 1 vs the sonos 1 (but since the sonos 1 hasn't been released yet, no one has actually listened to it).
This is a good (the cheapest) way to see if you want to buy further devices to expand into other rooms/etc. And at this price, you won't lose much if you decide to sell it on ebay after trying it out.

While I'm sure they'll be cheaper during BF, couldn't wait to hear two in stereo.
I've learned the new Sonos One will not sync in stereo with the Play One. If they did, I'd wait for the Sonos One to be cheaper and get it instead.
I will be using these with Alexa.
