Redbox now offering Disney digital codes for $2.99+ YMMV

It appears that Redbox is now offering digital codes starting at $2.99. The codes are on physical paper (Blu Ray inserts) and must be picked up at the box. I picked up Star Wars Force Awakens. The code worked in Vudu and is in HDX quality.

Looks like only Disney movies for now, but the list is larger now than it was last week.

$9.99
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Beauty and the Beast (live action)

$7.99
Doctor Strange
Moana
Rogue One

$5.99
Finding Dory
Frozen
Inside Out
Maleficient
Force Awakens
Pete's Dragon
Jungle Book (live action)
Big Hero 6

$3.99
Cinderella (live action)

$2.99
Planes 2
Alice 2
Iron Man 3

It was in HDX? That's not bad. Thanks, I'll have to check it out! Repped.

Would have never considered Redbox for digital codes.
In comparison to the digital code sites most of the Redbox were priced much lower.

Thanks for the post

Thanks. I didn't go through all of the movies. They added a lot more since last week when I got Star Wars. I updated the list.

I can confirm that my copy is in HDX in Vudu. When I bought it, the code didn't specify SD or HD. However, I took a chance and when I redeemed it through Vudu it was HDX.

Is it just me or is this *insane*? Why on earth would a vendor selling downloadable content make you go to a location to receive it??? They clearly do not get the business model and are going to be left behind like Blockbusted if they don't wise up fast...
Because if you don't go to the box, you can't pickup or drop off a movie. They probably make about $0 off of these codes and just want to drive traffic to the boxes so people get something else when they go to the box. I think they get their business model very well even if it is annoying if you just want a code.

This is a nearly new thing for Redbox (about < two weeks or so this has been live). This isn't going to be a HUGE thing for them as in MOST cases they buy Blu-rays & DVDs in Bulk packaging prices (sans the Digital Copies). It's clear that they have been purchasing Disney in Full Retail (likely because Disney does NOT have a contract with Redbox) and offered no Bulk / deal pricing and are simply seeking to recoup by selling off the Digital Copies.

Blockbuster had NO land assests and large rental B&M overhead.
Redbox has a small footprint and low overhead. This requires no change in the way they operate in order to expand in a small way to selling the digital copies. An automated checkout process would seem like a reasonable step in the future but it may simply not be worth it to them. If people like the prices they will drive to get them if not they won't. The codes selling out will not be a problem for them, only a minor inconvenience for some buyers.

Perhaps when they obtain the disc from Disney they all contained codes.
Instead of throwing them away they started selling them 🤔

Rent the disc and sell the codes. I have bought digital codes from a couple of places that I suspect are video rental stores.

Are these digital codes to own the movie? Or to rent them? Can I use T-Mobile Tuesday codes or Redbox credit to get them?
