Jeez what would a normal guy be doing to harness the power of this bad boy?
Video editing/downsamping/etc. Also useful for photo RAW manipulation.
I convert my private videos (DJI product (drones), Canon T6s, GoPro, Yi, etc) from 4K (or native resolution) to x265.
My i7-4900MQ takes more than double the time my Xeon E5-2687W v3 and that only has 10c/20threads. This chip is also 3.5Ghz/4.0Ghz vs my 3.1Ghz/3.5Ghz, so this would likely be a nice bump.
Not worth the jump for me, but pointing that out... x265 is a huge time hog, but I see at least a 20% decrease in file sizes vs. x.264. When you can take 10-30GB of videos in a day it makes a HUGE difference.
I think AMD ran a very effective marketing campaign AND had a product that blew the competition away in terms of price/performance. I do have to say though, that Intel's chips are more stable and would (possibly) last longer? My i7-3770 is still running fine after 4 years of use (bought in 2013 for $290. CPUs depreciate like crazy).
I wonder when would the 1950X be sold for 1/3 today's price. Maybe by the end of 2018?

Not an amd fanboy and I'm currently using Intel on my main rig but my other pc, an oc'ed Phenom II 955 BE is still up and running and bought summer '09?

Only because Intel kept the core count the same. The future is cores.

these days they all last long with proper cooling and good power delivery, had an Athlon 64 FX-74 that lasted just over 8 years before motherboard died...cpu probably still works.
