Does someone maybe make a high performance desktop that doesn't look like it fits the visual sensibilities of a not very bright 7 year old?

yes it's a good deal. a 3gb 1060 goes for about 200-240 on its own, the i5-6400 about 170, etc. if u bought all the parts on your own it would likely be around $1000.

in retrospect probably not 1000, but definitely more than 700. you can't buy oem parts off the shelf so we are paying more for retail versions of the same parts.

The case knocks about $400 off the value. Even at $250 I might have to end up paying someone to take it away, either that or lock it in the basement so as to not disturb anyone withs it's horrific deformed look.

Seriously it's not only the visual ugliness. It is the mess and aggravation that goofy proprietary case designs make for upgrades add ons and and modification. It brings nothing and only lowers the value as a gaming or high performance computer. You would think the market for gaming and high performance would shun such terrible designs but I guess the marketing guys must know something and it appears their market wants something looking like a toy.

Couldn't agree more. Some of the gaming PCs posted the last few days have been pretty decent except for the horrible looking case. Also, as you pointed out, I have no idea if it'll be a pain to swap parts because of the cases.

I'm looking for a PC with good specs for photo and video editing and I click over all excitedly and see this stuff. Even If I could get past the looks I'm pretty absolutely sure it would be a total pain to work on. I remember all the curvy cases back in the day and much screaming and cursing trying to do something as simple as install a hard drive.

I'm all for aesthetics but form should follow function then you have something truly beautiful versus gaudy, clunky obscene and just damn silly looking. Sadly this trend is not just in computer cases.

Does anyone know if this is a good starter PC that can be upgraded down the road? Or should I wait and build my own?

The video game card dictates that the whole thing must look like a toy.
