The 4k disk playback of the xbox is true 4k with HDR, it's just the games etc that are upscaled. The picture quality of the XBOX should be at least as good as most budget 4k players, and they have even added atmos support lately which used to be lacking.

I use an Xbox One S. Here are the issues I have with it:

No Dolby Vision HDR.
Loud disc drive - I can hear it spinning during quiet scenes.
Loud disc is always spinning even when you aren't watching the disc - so even if I switch to Netflix or whatever, I still hear that VRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
Remote control not included, so add that to the cost.
If you don't get a remote control, then it is SUPER awkward to use a controller.
UI is awkward. It is not designed for movie playback, it is designed for avatar/social, gaming, and showing ads.

You people need to learn how to keep your idiotic blather to yourselves. Seriously. You're as bad as the clowns who threadcrap game deals with, "lol who buys games?"

What if your Internet goes down or you're someplace where you don't have access to or can afford a fast enough service? A couple of weeks ago my Comcast went out for a couple of hours so no Netflix, no YouTube, no watching my UHD copy of Spider-Man Homecoming on Vudu. So I fired up my Sony X800 and watched discs.

Also, the way Netflix is losing movies and shows makes relying on streaming foolish. Fringe, Buffy and Angel left, but I've got my Blu-rays and DVDs. Matrix movies are leaving in November, but ditto. Disney is clawing back all their Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and Disney flicks in 2019. Good thing I have my discs and so on. Not to mention the quality is superior because you have 50-100GB of space on a disc versus whatever a compressed stream weighs.

Nice post OP, but I have a question. Why get a stand alone 4k player vs. XBOX One S? I have the latter and it seems to be doing just fine for 4k, but I feel it's 3d performance is questionable. I am using my Sony 3D Bluray to play 3d movies and playing everything else (physical media wise) through the XBOX. I noticed "Crosstalk" issues on Guardians of the Galaxy through XBOX and not so much on the Sony 3D player. I think my Sony TV model had some previous reported issues of crosstalk.

FYI, UBD-M9500 model does not play 3D blu-rays. Last year's UBD-K8500 did and it also had a second HDMI output, which the M9500 does not.

Great entry level 4K Blu-ray player for the price. Good for people who don't have a Fry's nearby and no tax in some states.

*partially* false. M9500 has dual HDMI.

Neither the M8500 nor the M9500 play 3D blu-rays. The M8500 only has one HDMI output, while the M9500 has two to allow one to be connected to the TV and one to the AV receiver for older receivers that don't do 4K passthru.

Edit: Looks like the M8500 does have an optical digital audio out connection as well as the single HDMI output, so there is a way to get audio to an older AVR.

I actually looked into this myself and what I found was the the Xbox one S only does 4k up scaling and doesn't offer true 4k and HDR. If your TV doesn't have those capabilities then a expensive 4k player is not necessary for you and the Xbox would be the better option as it is more bang for your buck.

2017 model?

I had trouble in the past using Samsung to play my own video library. Instead I switched to a Sony (equally dumb but worked.) Has Samsung made any improvement on that?
