Do these count towards A-list status if bought (instead of earned through flights)?

Purchased points and bonus points do NOT count towards A-List, A-List Preferred, or Companion Pass qualification.

Yes,correct.

For my opinion, these points help when there is uncertainty in a plan, so if you book in advance then you can cancel it for a full refund - the same number of points will be deposited into your account.

I received a mail from Southwest and also checked on their website about this promotion of getting up to 50% bonus points when you purchase a minimum of 5000 points which costs $137.50. I have got 40% bonus which is 5000+2000. Attached the screenshot.

I checked my Southwest Rapid Rewards account and MY promotion was only good for 30% bonus points. Considering that others will get 40% and 50%, I won't purchase any. Not sure why Southwest would randomly reward some more than others. As a business traveler that almost exclusively flies SW airlines, this seems like a promotion that has potential to insult loyal customers rather than reward them.
