Yep. Not a deal. I got it for 169 including $20 BB gc (although they never came - still a good deal though).

WD doesn't make 8TB Blacks.

Not joking. I get my NAS drives from these easystore 8TB external drives

Maybe joking about the black because they dont make 8TB black drives but I really stick to these BB drives when they go on sale so not sure about the other external WD drives
That wasn't a "joke", it was an outright lie.

I'm not doubting you, but does anyone know why a WD red drive would be way cheaper in an external case than it is separate? Amazon shows $274 for an 8TB WD red. I'm wondering if these are the ones that didn't pass certain quality standards for a NAS drive, but they were good enough for a USB external.

Warranty and marketing. The internal drives have 3yr vs 2yr, and you'd have to void the warranty on the easystore if you wanted to mount it internally. The easystore drives aren't marketed with the benefits of a red drive for NAS performance, so people without a lot of insight into the industry will pay the premium for what they see as a premium product. I'd also guess most of their sales are for business applications, where removing the drives and disposing of the enclosures would be accounted for vs private consumers who generally undervalue their time. I honestly don't know why people get excited for deals on retail drives that they immediately void the warranty of, just buy OEM and don't pay for a warranty you intend to void.

As for why does WD use red drives in some of their externals? For larger capacities they probably only make one design, then label them for sale according to quality control standards. Passes muster? Put it in a retail box. Slightly underperforms? Put it in an enclosure, slap a lower tier label on, mark it as OEM, etc.

This is not a GREAT deal, but it is still a deal off the MSRP. The thumbs-down are NOT deserved.

Hopefully, we'll see some of the previous prices on Black Friday, but this price may be the "new normal" sales price otherwise.

so it looks like Best Buy has a new version of the WD EasyStore, with a different model # WDBCKA0080HBK-NEBB

Link: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easystore-8tb-external-usb-3-0-hard-drive-black/6110900.p?skuId=6110... [bestbuy.com]

does anyone know what the difference is?
also, i wonder if this is a sign that the older model # will go on clearance soon. hopefully back to $160 or lower
