E3-1225 (v1) is Sandy Bridge from 2011. Used desktop of that generation is $100 or so.

The new Precision T30 has E3-1225 v5, the second newest with almost the same performance as the newest v6.

Another main difference would be 128GB SSD here vs T30's no SSD but 1TB HDD.

Yeah, I was wondering about the version. I can't tell or it doesn't say (which presumably means it's v1). I later noticed the v5 on the Dell deal.

If anyone is eyeing this, better deal for this (for the hardware specs) can be had on Ebay I think.

I'm tempted to jump on an Ebay deal myself as I'm on a budget, and I don't want to shell out around $300 (for the Dell deal), then cost of adding ram. But the Dell deal is new new.

Comparison:

What am I losing if I bought a used Dell Precision, E3-1225, w/ lots or ram, on Ebay, for way cheaper?

I'm setting up a home lab, running Hyper-V (bare metal), then VMs.

I picked up a T1600 for 80 bucks off ebay a few months back. No SSD (+50) and less ram (+30). So this looks like a terrible deal. Much better hunting for a used T1600 yourself and upgrading as necessary.

Looks like E3-1225 v5 can be upgraded to 64GB ram.

v1 is up to 32GB ram.

Yeah, I'm mainly be using it to run VMs.

Many systems will be an upgrade to what I currently have, an HP Proliant N40L w/ 8GB ram.

And if I can get it for cheap, as possible, w/ lots of ram, the better.

Thanks. Yeah ouch, I just checked crucial.com, about $115 more for a 8GB ecc stick for the T30, totaling 16GB with the included 8GB.

Swap those out to get 32GB total? Forget about it. About $400!

For my budget a used "server" or computer w/ 16gb for under $200 on ebay might be better.

Even upgrading (or swapping) the ram of my Proliant N40L to 16GB, would still be up there, though if I could find a deal.
