Right, which means no HD transcoding. It won't do what it won't do. But still fine for Plex etc if you are just file serving.

EXCELLENT reviews and owner feedback as a file server.

See this. [guru3d.com]

And this [eteknix.com]. If your goal is simple file serving, backups etc. on the cheap, Sounds Perfect.

Price seems nice. Any way to beef up the unit?

I plan on using this as a file server only for international file access. Will it be good for that?

I dont see why not, I have used weaker NAS's in the past for file storage and retrieval and they work perfectly fine. As long as you know how to setup the apps properly should make it even easier to retrieve your files no matter what device you are using.

Could you please explain what's the advantage of HD transcoding ability for NAS? I have a few WD NAS drives with movies (including high bitrate BD rips in full HD) and a few WD TV Live players in my setup, no issues playing anything both over wi-fi and wired connection. Will I see any benefits from HD transcoding?

Just encode for Direct Play. Don't know why you'd let Plex transcode down using a trash, fast profile...

Sylentz is right. Transcoding means the NAS converts video files on the fly to be playable on your device. Almost no one uses a NAS for this because it requires a high end expensive one. Even if you prefer on the fly transcoding, you could run Plex on your more powerful PC and just use the NAS to access the files.

Point is, do some research but this will handle most peoples needs just great.

Just means the files can be playied on any device. Since you are using WD TV its sending and receiving files in probably the same format so you see no problems. If you tried to watch it on your phone for instance you would probably get an error or if it did play it might be unwatchable. A unit that does HD transcoding can adjust the file to fit any device.

No idea, but everything it will do is based on its ADM 3 software.

For specific questions, it is well worth checking out. Even includes online tutorials.
