8th gen is right around the corner, with the i5 rocking 6 cores. 8th gen also requires a new chipset (so not compatible with old motherboards).

not really a hot buy when you consider the 8700k is msrp'd at 359 and an 8th gen

Yeah, but for the price, it's really good, seeing other retailers are pricing it around the $338 range with tax. Intel will always change the chipsets. Heck Cannon Lake is due to be released in Q2 2018, then Ice Lake in 2018/2019 Q4, with another all new chipset, which then leads you to buy a new motherboard anyways. The manufactures of boards and chips work hand in hand with each other to keep the prices like they are.

I do rendering, and the I5 would not be good for me in my workstation, it's not just for gaming. Also the 8th Gen is not backwards compatible. Meaning when they release Ice Lake, you can't toss that chip in there in your new updated 10 nm board. But, with the 14 nm chipset, you have a wide range of boards you can toss it into NOW. Nobody has $359 with tax, $400 laying around, and the motherboard is going to cost you well into the $400 mark at release next year. My build with the I7 7700K, with the asus maximus ix hero, has totally cost me only $640, including ram and a case, tax free from Fry's.

If your on a budget, work with what you can, if you got the dough, good for you. Just my thoughts :L0) It's like people who love windows 7 over windows 10. Get what works for your own applications.

It's Intel that's doing that to you. They decide what reference chipset design to use, and they sell it to board manufacturers. It's another way for them to make $ every CPU sale, while seemingly offering a "lower" priced CPU.

AMD, on the other hand, has guaranteed Ryzen and their next line will run on the same chipset (350/370), so you're good for at least one more design cycle with that chipset.

If you're getting an i5 8xxx then mind as well get this one because they're on par except z270 is a much cheaper platform. Z370 only makes sense over this CPU if you're buying the i7

And technically it'll work on most z170s with a bios flash...
