A company called GKids distributes Studio Ghibli movies in the US now; these Blu-rays no longer carry Disney branding. Doesn't seem like GKids has digital rights. More info here [animenewsnetwork.com].

How long is it going to be before Disney and Studio Ghibli work out Digital HD for these titles? I'm not buying until they do.

My understanding is that Ghibli has a stance against digital. There aren't digital version of the Ghibli films in Japan either. Grave of the Fireflies is the only one available digitally in the US, but I hear Ghibli animated that movie for a different company so Ghibli doesn't actually own the rights.

There is such a thing as blu ray rippers. You literally can take the video from blu ray and make your own digital copy? Costs a bit but by the time these are digital it'll be 2099 lol

As much as I love Ghibli movies, I'm not buying any of them until they get over their archaic viewpoint of not offering digital versions. Now that I have little kids, I can't be bothered with managing a precious scratch-free disc in a single location, meanwhile I can access my other movies from any of my devices.

You are not wasting money on physical media. Streaming is lower quality and doesn't eat into your download quota monthly. Very, VERY smart collecting Blu-ray's and UHD Blu-ray's.

Maybe it's just me but I've hardly see a scratched blu ray. Don't they have a special coating?
