ABC Gift Card issue: should I spend the incomplete balance?

Right this very second, I'm having car work done at Jiffy Lube, and I just bought a few gift cards from ABC Gift Cards to pay for it. (The work is more than an oil change, and will run several hundred dollars.) The gift card I bought was supposed to be around $450, but actually has $180. I paid $360 for it.

Should I use the incomplete $180 balance to pay for my work now?

* Will using the balance invalidate my refund claim? ABC won't be able to verify the incomplete balance of the card. I have already filed a refund request and attached a screenshot of the balance. They probably won't reply today.

* If I don't spend the balance, can I just get a complete refund and give up the card? Or must I keep the card, and ABC will they only refund the difference (possibly pro-rated by the discount percentage: they could adjust my cost as if I had bought a $180 card at X% discount).

I go to Jiffy Lube sometimes, but I'm not thrilled about holding on to a $180 card until I spent it on my next several oil changes. (Especially if this card is actively being used by the original owner!)

I would contact ABC right away -- don't use the card.

Thanks, I think you're right about not spending. (And I definitely did contact them just before writing this post.)

I just reviewed their refund policy [abcgiftcards.com] and it says they will give a "full refund" so I think they'll undo the entire transaction by default. Spending the balance is only going to mess up my chances of things going smoothly, since I can't "give the balance back" to undo my part of the transaction.

To help anyone with a similar issue in the future: DO NOT spend the incomplete balance. Just buy a replacement card (if you want) and wait for a full refund on the faulty one. Here's what happened:

* I filled out the contact form with my order ID and issue. This message was cc'd back to me via e-mail. I replied to the automatic email thread with an attached screenshot of the balance.

* The next day, I got an email from the claims department saying they will fully refund the purchase (since it was within CardCash's 45-day guarantee window), and that I should send a message to their legal department with a promise that I would not spend or share the incomplete gift card.

* After I sent that email, I got a full refund minutes later.

If I had spent some part of the card, I don't know what would have happened. With the card untouched by me, they were happy to fully reverse the transaction if I promised to "return" the card as-is (i.e., never use it).
