Why would you need this? If your stereo doesnt get as loud as you'd like? Or does it make the sound better?

An amp like this is going to be more for headphones I think. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

NVM this is multifunction.

This should create a clearer sound that pulls more depth from the audio source. A lot of systems will just push power without being nuanced to enhance the detail.

A few reasons
1: Replacement for Built in TV speakers (Without doing a soundbar)
- I already had several sets of good speakers
2: It does indeed sound better than TV Speakers
3: it gives you several input options
4: Replacement AMP for Desktop PC too.
I used the USB connection to go to my (already had) Bluetooth to USB dongle to power it, then to the 3.5mm input. Basically making it bluetooth as well.

Check out the customer pictures and reviews. Many uses for this

Don't knock it if you're not familiar with SMSL Amps. Haha. It's a Chinese company for sure, but they output very high quality little DACs and Small form factor Amplifiers.

It's an amplifier used to power speakers.

If you're just swapping amp for amp, you'll likely not see much difference. It's not a very powerful amp. But, of course, it will depend upon what amp you're talking about.

Better than what? Certainly, as blackflag486 stated, it'll probably give better results than TV speakers - that is if you've got some decent speakers.

The main draw for this would probably be the multiple, selectable input sources, and the subwoofer out. There aren't many small amps with the subwoofer out.

Also, I saw in the Q/A at Amazon someone stated the subwoofer out is actually full range. However, at PartsExpress [parts-express.com] it states:

Quote :
Line level subwoofer output with built-in 200 Hz, 24dB/octave low pass filter
Altogether, this makes it a great setup for bedroom/dorm room/destktop speakers.

Nice amp. Be warry of plugging in the back power connector. You will observe a large spark!.
Plug it into the amp first, then the wall.
Sound is good. Nice being able to attenuate the output, with bass and treb.
If your speakers sound great the way they are, and you feel no need to adjust the equalizer, then go for the smsl 50. Normally like $65 on Amazon, but can acquire for $45 used.
Unfortunately, the cheaper model has no remote... unfortunately, the remote on the Q5 is literately a POS anyways. But nice to have a few buttons that work.
For those of you that wish this had Bluetooth support, well bt sounds like crap, and smsl would prefer not to dabble with it. They do have it in their higher end models though. But better to get a Chromecast. Much cleaner sound.

If you don't need the EQ, remote, and DAC, get this thing. Better sounding chipset, about twice as much power. It's a beast (in a hilariously small package).

I mean, most subwoofers have a built in crossover on them. Passive subs are kind of a silly idea with an amp this small.....

Who said anything about a passive sub? We want a sub out to use an active sub.
