Jerky prices are insane these days... Make your own... If you have been here a while, you see deals for knives to slice roasts or flank steaks, electric slicers if you want a more even cut, dehydrators, oven probe thermometers if you wish to go that route etc...

My Ex-favorite jerky doubled their prices, so I went back to making my own.

Making your own is easy and lets just put it this way... What I sliced and marinaded today for dehydrating tomorrow is 6.7 pounds @ $2.98 a pound for Meyer's Natural Cross Rib Roast... More fat than I would like to slice off, but the trade off is no Antibiotics or Hormones.

So that is $20 for the beef, and around $3 for the marinade including spices... $23 for 6.7 pounds equals $3.43 per pound instead of $12.35 per pound of THIS mass produced sat on the shelf for how long??? stuff loaded with nitrites or other chemicals etc...

Making your own means you know what goes in the marinade... Total control and saving cash like a Madman or Madwoman...

Yes, it's legwork to start making your own jerky, there is no perfect recipe for anything, you need to get the marinade right and the cooking time right and the proper dehydrator to use right and the proper knives, blah blah blah... It's an experiment, but if you don't mind getting your hands dirty and cleaning up, it's fun and worth it in the end...

Anybody can get by with a basic Ronco or other plastic circle style dehydrator, a bowl large enough to marinade beef cuts, a basic slicer or a good knife etc...

That difference in price I talked about... The $3.43 versus $12.35 catches up real quick if you make jerky enough, and as an added bonus with a dehydrator, you can do all the fruits and vegetables and herbs etc...

Based on my specific calculations, if you do that 3 times, it pays for a circle dehydrator... Buy the big Stainless STX International 600 watt like I have, it will pay for itself quickly if you like jerky as much as you physically should.

Rant over, but it's been a long time since I chewed leather... Once you go Homegrown, you never go back. PERIOD.

20% daily sodium per ounce versus 33% for the individual serving Jack Links original flavor that I picked up last time they went on sale. Those ones were crazy salty, I hope the teriyaki flavor is better.

I'm confused with these S&S deals. I can S&S to anything to get 5% off. Why is it on SD?
The price is lower than usual at the moment, plus you get S&S.

It's not just because of the S&S.

Oh, it doesn't show the original price for me, just the 5% difference. I'll have to pull up CCC.
