Amazon has the Kindle edition of Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert on sale for $1.99. This is book 2 in the series; the Dune books AFAIK so rarely go on sale, worth jumping on at this slick price:

Good price for a part of a great series. Shame the Audible edition add on isn't lower but still is cheaper than a standard credit.

Thanks, I just started this series a few months ago. Having finished the first, I've been waiting for the second to go on sale.

I listened to the audiobook and cared for it very little. The production was fine but the story just seemed aimless. Is the 2nd in the series the same? I guess I'm asking about the story, not the audiobook version.

Best to stop at God Emperor of Dune in my opinion.

It gets better, trust me. Wave Dune is still my favorite sci-fi series of all time.

This seems to be a popular opinion. Maybe I'm crazy, but I enjoyed them all; even the many books after the original series.

I recently finished the first book and loved it. I've heard some of the later books are pretty bad.

Can I read just this book and get a complete story? The first book ended without a real cliff hanger and I'd be happy to discontinue the series if I'd be forced to read all the mediocre books to get the full story

Yes, you can read just the first book as a whole story, but you miss out on the world's depth.

As for later books:

- Frank Herbert started losing his memory, and would often repeat things that were already known, so there is some of that.

- Brian Herbert has been accused of cashing in on his name and father's body of work. I haven't read any of his and Kevin J Anderson's collaborations, so can't speak to their quality. I've heard mixed reviews.

I read all of Frank Herbert's Dune books and have a couple of the books by his son but I stopped at reading after a couple.

If I recall books 4 and 5 are pretty forgettable, but I really liked Chapterhouse (#6). I think I read 3 more trilogies from his son and Anderson-they're not as good as the originals.

Got Dune #1 last $2 sale, and now Book 2 so I guess I'll recollect the series slowly, $2 at a time.
