Actually saw, hooked up, and heard this a couple a days ago. Not sure what the excitement is about because this thing left me completely unimpressed from a sound, size, and format perspective.

Sorry, but I don't think it's worth $35 new, let alone as a refurb. Don't buy this without seeing it and listening first..... unless you have to go swimming with it.... which i kind of doubt...

What would you recommend in the $50-100 range?

Anker has great options for that price range

It's okay for in pool/spa/shower. The sound isn't very impressive but it does the job. It also comes with a floater to keep the speaker from sinking. At $35 you won't regret it.

If you are patient Groupon runs a deal on the Jawbone Big Jambox for $60-$75. It isn't waterproof but best sound quality and available volume in that price range. The are tough and last forever. Mine has tumbled out of a golf cart multiple times and keeps going.

When I tested it, sounded much better than the iHome that I paid $50 for. Seems good for $35.

To me, it's only fair to compare to other water proof speakers. I'm sure there are sound quality compromises in making a submersible speaker

Groupon's refurb Sony XB20 for $48 is probably a better deal than the Big Jambox.

Prob wouldn't give you $20 .. sound quality is not too good compared to other speakers out there ... like not even close.
