Android TV is like Apple TV unleashed. you can play games from the Google Play store, download any app for streaming free content, use it as a smart home hub or just stream 4K content from the apps you would usually use (like Netflix).

there are plenty of android TV boxes out on the market but the Shield TV is the most powerful and speedy supported by a company who regularly pushes out updates and bug fixes for their products. after Google nixed the Nexus player, the market has been littered with junk Android boxes from lil known Chinese manufacturers

my brother has an actual Android TV and once a month I have to clear cache and soft reboot it because it becomes slow and non-responsive. i just bought this for him so (1) he can have a carefree Android TV experience and (2) so I can stream content including games from my PC to his 65" 4K TV downstairs.

i'd say for most people it may be overkill. a Firestick could satisfy most people.

beware shield has crappy 4K upscaling and will result in poor picture quality when streaming non-4K content to a 4K TV. Most high end TVs such as Samsung and Sony have better upscalers and non 4K content will look much better with the TV doing the upscaling.

Only way to disable shield from upscaling everything to 4K is to manually change the settings in preferences to 1080p so that will allow the TV to upscale to 4K. Then when playing 4K content it needs to be again manually switched back to 4K. This was reported to Nvidia for a long time and and it still has not been addressed. This is a pretty significant oversight on a media player that is marketed as a high end device.

Yeah, they must've matched Best Buy's price finally.

Checked Amazon as soon as I got the deal alert for this earlier, was still the reg. $199.99 before. Thanks

This is a whopping $10 cheaper than Nvidia's deal in June and Best Buy's deal in August. Maybe those $10 make enough difference to some people, but it's going to have to drop a lot more before I add a Nvidia Shield to my collection of media players. I know the Nvidia Shield is good, but then so are IPhones I'm told, yet I still resist buying Apple products because I don't like feeling price gouged.
It's not just "good'. It's the best there is. Until something can compete with it....there's no real incentive to drop the price so even a "whopping" $10 off the lowest it's ever been makes it a good deal.

This is the BF Price. Some of the items are reflecting BF price today itself. This is one of them.
