Stores like Home Depot and Walmart clearanced this model at $49.99 earlier this year. One can find relevant threads on SlickDeals.

Not if you want to simply view live video. However, if you want to record video, then $30/year is unavoidable.

I have the ring doorbell and am very disappointed in it.
1) Poor video quality. The default view looks like you are looking through a peephole and, although you can zoom it to fill your phone screen, there doesn't seem to be a way to change the default. My entrance is similar to many with a covered area at the door that is shaded opening out to an uncovered sunny front yard. The camera is of too poor quality to handle this variability in lighting conditions so, while the area near the door is reasonably clear, everything beyond about 10 feet is washed out by the brighter lighting conditions (I have another camera in the same location that doesn't have that problem).
2) The motion sensing is nearly useless. It doesn't detect a person approaching the door until they are a few feet away, but it generates annoying false positives from vehicles passing on the street 40 feet away. I haven't been able to adjust the sensitivity in any way that avoids this senario.
3) My setup requires me to use the ring on battery only, which means I have to dismount the doorbell for several hours about once a month to charge the battery, a PITA. This should not be an issue for those able to connect to existing doorbell wiring.
4) I have several camera systems and this is the only one I have that doesn't include some amount of ongoing free cloud storage (other than the one month trial).

I am on my 2nd Zmodo Greet (the first was a bit of a dud, but the return was flawless) and it has worked fantastic. Holds 24 hours of video no charge, but you can pay for longer cloud storage.

I chased it down at Walmart and on the Ring site when it hit $50 and wasn't able to get. This is the cheapest I've seen it since. I'm still debating too but I have a $75 BB gift card from the laptop trade in burning a hole in my pocket.

you can either pay $30 for a year or $3 a month to try it out if you are not sure. That way if you are not feeling it you can return it in 14 days and are only out the $3 monthly subscription.

Not a bad deal for one that you know you can get and don't have to hunt down for one that might be left on the shelf. Mine has been going strong now for about 2 years.

I had a package stolen from my doorstep so I picked one of these up for $100. Worth it. $30/year to store videos on Ring's website. I don't use it to answer the door remotely but I do use the free app to see who is at the door if the bell is pressed.

You can also remove the lower metal cover and paint it any color. Not difficult to do.

My "outdated" model has been amazing for a year and a half. If I didn't already have one, I would buy this at $100 in a heart beat.
