How bad does this Celeron CPU suck? I almost think the frequent deals (even at the Outlet) on the T30 with a Quad core XEON and 8GB RAM might be a better over-all deal?

$199 is a sweet price for a server but that CPU...

It's upgradeable to a Hyper threaded 2 core version for $30 more. Probably not going to do more than 1 transcode but for a personal Plex server or just a file server (no transcode) with multiple users it would be fine. Think if this as a low power NAS with upgradeable hardware

Mind you, you are not locked in into that setup and can change the CPU and RAM as needed, of course that will make the price go up, but will still be saving a good amount of money.

I have this server, but with the Xeon 1230 v5 and 16GB Ram, and a few other added things. I payed around $330 months ago, Its a really good home server, which in a lot of cases, not many will push the limits of.

I understand that the parts are upgradeable. But XEON's aren't cheap.

I did just find at the Dell Outlet a T130 with a XEON E3-1270 V5, 2x1TB drives and a H730 PERC w/1GB cache for $439 after 12% coupon (could have gotten an extra 5% but the 12% code wasn't working online and had do deal with phone rep who then would not give me the 5% friend referral as he said that's good online only).

The T130 also has iDRAC. Couple hundred bucks more than this, but way more on the way to being a real server. (which I will be using it for, not just a Plex machine, etc.).

Where did you find it for 330? I bought this server a year ago for $440.

I would rather get something from dellrefurbished.com and swap out the hard drive with a new one. They usually have a 30% - 48% coupon every month or so.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Pr...gnorebbr=1 seems like it would work good as a server for $175 AC even shoprunner eligible.

Do you know if Dell have a small form factor machine as well, similar to HP Elite 8300 SFF? I'm looking for one to use as a Plex server as well.

I'm sure they do, if you're looking for a standalone transcode server Fry's has some sff fell/hp refurbished computers with i7-3770 and 8gb for about $250. Would transcode about 4 simultaneous streams and you would just need to provide decent storage, maybe replace the internal in the case with an 8tb shucked from USB drive, and hook a second 8tb USB drive up to IO on motherboard. You'd could have a nice server going for sub $600 delivered after tax, with an i7, And 8gb ram, and a fully backed up 8tb of storage with a worthless windows 10 OEM drive to move somewhere else

Ok, will check thx. I already have a NAS in place. My laptop isn't able to take a lot of load for Plex streams and it's about 10 yrs old Smilie So want to have something better in place to replace it.

Probably not. Id assume a single 16x a couple of 4x and maybe an 8x. Definitely not enough power and possibly a proprietary mobo power pin setup
