I hate the fact its hdmi 1.4 instead of hdmi 2.0, so it can't output at the premium 60hz 4k to an external display. Plus it doesn't even have USB 3.1 either, just 3.0 which is half the speed. I plan to use my laptop to mainly connect externally to my 1080p tvs. I'm considering buying a 4k display with touchscreen to wet my beak with a higher resolution, high end being the new 8th gen spectre for 1200 on black friday. I'm not sure if I'll be able to notice much difference between 1080p/4k on a 15inch screen even if I'm almost nose to nose with it. What do you guys think? Is 4k worthwhile on a laptop for watching media? Should I buy a cheap machine and spend the difference on a 4k tv instead?

I read a few reviews that the 4k display causes issues with the text being enlarged, overlapping and unreadable. Despite scaling down the resolution or item and text size settings.

Also read:
"3840X2160 that means all adobe suite, chrome and any other programs will need to be modified with a custom manifest file or by selecting to -200% scale size down everything in the display options. When working with the video and photos, the size a resolution are crucial and if you have to alter the program or display pre-editing software what you get in the final product on other displays is not always what you were looking at on the laptop."

Any thoughts?

For a 4k screen plus SSD it's a good deal. I have the same laptop though I had to add my SSD. The only thing is the 960m is last generations GPU the new 1050/1050ti that are shipping in the newer version of this laptop are much more powerful and are comparable to desktop graphics cards. If you are playing older/less demanding games it should be fine though you will mostly be playing at 1080p.
Any issues with text being overlapped or enlarged? Hard to read?

No issues with text overlapping, as for hard to read windows 10 has text scaling so you can adjust the text size to your liking. I think I have mine set to 200% and out of the box the text size is set higher than 100%.

It's a nice quality display that is better than the 1080p TN pannel when I compared them in store.

Everyone is looking at gaming laptops but I need one for office work as my lattitude is out of warranty and crapping out. I think this will be excellent given the SSD and 16GB of RAM. Given that I'll throw it onto a docking station I think it's a pretty good deal. I haven't dealt with Thunderbolt yet so I don't think I'll really be missing anything. It's a lot cheaper than the $1500 I spec'd on the Dell site.

I am using 4K 15.6" display and never had such issue. Current Windows 10 has improved a lot in scaling and no such issues exists.

This is an older skylake model, its been on sale for this price often enough, but there's a newer model, the 7567. Best Buy has that on sale for $699. [bestbuy.com] Just keep in mind, if you look for the 7567 elsewhere, make sure to get one with an IPS display. I've read the regular panel sucks.

Make sure to compare apples to apples when you quote a lower price. $699 is for an i5 model with less memory and no 1TB disk.

I just used my Chase card to get 5% cash back on this that I used to pay for most of the 3 year protection plan. If anything happens at all now, I feel pretty covered and I don't have to deal with Dell. Beautiful 4k touch screen, i7HQ performance, NVIDIA graphics control panel, 74wh 6 Cell Battery that should give me 4-5 hours with major use. I think this is a great deal for those who want a portable desktop/4k media powerhouse/touchscreen and light-moderate gaming capabilitites. Obviously if you care about more battery life, lighter weight, and folding it then I'd say prepare to spend more money with less in other areas.

Bro, there are several version of this model and this particual 4K model was never on sale at this price. You are confusing the i7, 8GB Rm, 1080P and 1TB HDD model with this one.

960m not worth it at this price, wait till bf or get a used 970m on ebay, can't game at 4k any way
970m can't do 4k either. heck, even 1070 can barely do 4k ultra on many games. Although I'd still look for 10 series cards 960m still provides a great balance between price and perfomance. I conveniently play AC Black Flag at 1080p 60 fps with some settings scaled down and Overwatch 60+ fps at ultra settings. I've also tried Far Cry 4, Fallout 4, Just cause 3 all of which did just fine.
This may not be the one for hard core gamers but it ain't a weak card by any means. that being said, I'd still look for a 1050 Ti and 7th gen processor unless you're on a budget, need decent 1080p gaming, want that 4k screen for media consumption. For those, this will be great. Not to mention this has a great build and stealth look unlike the budget gaming laptops.

Well... your link is an I-5 and has only 8GB of RAM, so it's not apples-to-apples...
