I have always wanted to buy some of these aftermarket filters, but what has kept me away is reading some of the horror stories about this practice. Decided not to chance it, better to stick to OEM here.

Fortunately this is Home Depot's house brand not some generic fly by night company. You can actually look up the NSF certification on the NSF website.

Finally found mine
https://www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-F.../204184412

$45 - two pack

Seems like I would be better off with something like these
https://www.amazon.com/Tier1-5231...VM39A?th=1

$26 - 3 pack

I am not sure if my fridge automatically bypasses filter when it is removed as if that was the case doing an external filter system would be another option.

The ones you listed don;t show any NSF certifications let alone NSF 53 which is the one you really want. The one you linked from Home Depot is NSF 42 and NSF 53 certified. big difference and the cheapest price you'll pay for filters with those certs.

I really just want the filter for ice maker to filter out hard water. But ya I figured that was the case. Just wish the ones I needed where a more than just $5 off.

Bought them for my Samsung and then returned. Prefer the real ones. The taste is totally different.

My filter light is always red. Every friend I️ know is the same way. We never replace the filter. Is it really that important from a health standpoint?

Yes yes it is bacteria grows after a while, my boss never changes her water filter and I make sure to take my own or prefer to drink straight outta the tap than to take a sip of that foul smelling water

That's strange. I have a Samsung and after draining 3 gallons of water it tastes exactly the same.
