Entry level "gaming" desktop help needed

2 10 November 9, 2017 at 05:09 AM
My teens/pre-teens want a computer upgrade for Christmas, and I'm more than a little lost on what specs we really needed as well as the best way to get a deal.

Details:

--Desktop only. Don't want them able to take to their rooms.
--I can build a machine if pointed to what parts I need. I have the tech capability, just totally lost on what is needed.
--Don't necessarily need super evergreen. If we can get 2 years or so, I'm happy. They'll be ready for more intense gaming by that point.
--Trying to stay under $300 for the machine without peripherals, as we need to buy 2.

What they want to do/play:

--Minecraft with mods
--Roblox
--Slither.io
--Steam with some downloading

Look this over, this should be a decent guide to get you started - http://www.logicalincrements.com/

If you don't already have keyboard, mouse, monitor, OS, etc...$300 is going to be tricky. Especially with modded Minecraft and "Steam" since "Steam" could mean almost any game.

Thanks!! We have the peripherals already from other machines, so those are easy.

And agree 100% on the ambiguity of just saying "Steam." I've gone rounds with my eldest on that one without any further details forthcoming.

The OS can be $100+. You might be better off finding something on eBay or Craigslist since it sounds like you have the ability to troubleshoot/debug.
