Garmin and Apple are narrowing the gap, but they still have big differences.

Apple is more of a smartwatch (LTE, texting, email . . . ) with some tools for workout

Garmin is more of a fitness/activity tracker (external sensors, professional look, flush HR sensor, always ON display, rep counting, one software for everything fitness ) with some tools as smartwatch.

Other factors to consider, Apple watch only works with Apple phones and the LTE version cost a bit more. If i have to predict i would say that in 2-3 years all the above factors will be gone the only thing that will matter is if you want Apple system or Android.

As for me, i do a lot of running and working out. I don't care for all the tools that the Fenix line has, yet i do want to be able to track my activities and use external HRM. I don't have an Apple phone so my best selection here is Viroactive 3.

a lot of people jumped on the Fenix 3,5 because no other alternatives where available couple of years ago. and i know a lot of Fenix users who only utilize a fraction of the Fenix capability. it was wise for garmin to recognize the gap in the market and provide the solution: vivoactive 3.
