I'm debating on whether to buy this or an Intel NUC to use as a Plex server, any thoughts?

Are there any apps on like fire TV or Roku where you can just stream from the NAS?

Any deals on 451+ this Black Friday?
HDMI is useful if you plan to use this for surveillance, these come with two camera license. But I need a 4 bay one. Come on, some vendor bring the 4 bay price to $350.

VLC or Kodi on Fire TV to stream, and they have software codec if hardware support is not there. Roku has media player app built in, I think, but some formats may not play natively.

Would you know if one can use Kodi on Fire TV to monitor surveillance from NAS (without HDMI on NAS box?) I bought an ASUSTOR setup with 4 surveillance licenses but without HDMI, making it kind of useless for live monitoring. Looking for a workaround.

So, dipping toe into NAS, and figured investing in a better router with USB + an external drive would be a similar setup at fraction of cost. Thoughts?

Not really. These things are essentially custom Linux boxes with pre-packaged/pre-configured open source software for people that don't want to fuss with Linux too much. These are good if you want to transcode media on the fly, using something like Plex.

If all you need are back ups and some basic media sharing then yeah you can probably get away with a cheaper solution like your suggestion.

Yeah - I only use Plex for photos and home movies, and my ShieldTV can already act as a server. Really just looking for a shared drive experience to share photos and home movies throughout my home.

Yes I upgraded the RAM in my QNAP TS-251-US (2GB) to 8GB. It is very easy to work with. Took about 5 minutes.
