Amazon continues it's streak of old school sci-fi/fantasy deals with the Kindle version of Lord Foul's Bane by Stephen Donaldson on sale for $0.99. This is book 1 in the highly divisive Thomas Covenant series but highly recommended for all to read and decide for themselves. They definitely don't write them like this anymore!

This is the first book of the first trilogy, and such an awesome anti-hero series about Thomas Convenant.

This book is ~30 years old, so you can likely pick it up for the same price at your local used book store.

Wikipedia says this was released in 1977. I was thinking it was older that 30 years so I looked it up. I'm 54 and read this as a teenager and was blown away! To this day I still tell my friends about it. "Don't write them like this anymore" is a very good way to put it.

If you could find this anywhere you probably would get it cheap, but I don't know that it's commonly stocked anywhere. Thanks for the post OP.

Don't know how I missed this one (then again my memory isn't what it used to be). Thanks, OP!

I️ enjoyed reading this in the 80's and was going to recommend it to my 13 year-old but I️ think I'll wait until he's older. There's a terrible rape scene.

I always feel like such an outcast when talking about this book, but it has to be hands down the worst book series I have ever read. The guy is such a downer, and the book just slogs on as he emo's his way around. Anyway just wanted to say even though the book gets high praise maybe do not do what I did and buy the set.

Most of the story is about redemption. About overcoming ones' demons for the greater good. It's about learning you dont have to be self-absorbed in your own pain and troubles. It's about learning to be more like Foamfollower and modeling your outlook accordingly.

You can't be 'redeemed' or 'see the light' if you dont come from a dark place to start with.

Our own world needs more Foamfollowers.

Stephen Donaldson is in my top 4 of fantasy authors of all time. for 15 years i read nothing by fantasy, alot of pretty average fantasy. JRRT and Feist were my faves, then i heard about SD and Thomas Covenant and i was blown away.
There i had been wasting my time reading garbage like Robert Jordan, when i could have been reading SD.

But as good as the Thomas Covenant story is, i believe the Gap into Conflict series is better, and i am not big on reading scifi as i am a complete fantasy nutter.

Would be a brave director that made turned Thomas Covenant to the big screen, but there again, i thought LoTR would never make a good conversion, but PJ proved me wrong (we will forgive him the Elves at Helmsdeep).

Not an outcast at all. I personally love the series as it blew my mind as a teenager. But it is one of the most divisive fantasy series ever - I don't know whose read it that doesn't have a strong opinion about it.

That's why I hope the low price and this thread discussion gets people try it and former their own opinion

Gap Into Conflict, his later series is probably even more polarizing with a protagonist who is even more flawed and deplorable than Covenant...

I have this whole series on paper back ( think it was at least 6 ), and read through at least 4.

It is really a good series -- I agree with the previous post about the scene in the first book when he first arrive in the new realm and did bad things to the lady. She is, however, very central to the theme of the book, as it sets up some inner conflict in her -- because she had to help him through out the book.

I would probably recommend this for someone who's in the latter teens to read (17+) and not 12-13.
Good writing and compelling narrative. Keep me glued and up reading into late nights.

Because of the "made up world" names, I would recommend reading this, rather than listening to the audio. I wished they could make a game out of this. That RING is powerful, unbeliever!
