I've been trying to find a black Friday deal on the new 2017 Roku Ultra. Everybody was saying they weren't going to be on sale or that you should just go with the 4k stick version. I however wanted the private listening feature in the remote, as well as the remote finder and USB local playback. With coupon code PSHOPEARLY through certain sellers you can get 20% off. I'm in Missouri so there was no sales tax.

Listed at $104.94 - 20%( $20.99)=$83.95

There are different apps you can download for a web browser, however they do not seem very highly rated. I have never downloaded any so I cannot rate any of them.

why i'm not going to thumbs up this roku ultra. (sorry for the long rant below)

i have a roku 3, 4k and this ultra. was able to get this ultra for $86.99 with a loyalty code exactly one year and two weeks ago. well, the ultra gave me hdcp 2.2 errors from 370 days--5 days after the warranty expired. (now trying to go through my citicard extended warranty--not as easy to file as amex, but 2 years for citi vs 1 year for amex.) i've tried to isolate the problem with roku's help--but the device just went buggy a few days after the one year mark. uncanny.

i do like the interface of roku. but for me, having a standalone roku just adds a layer of complexity that can frustrate anyone trying to get the best picture possible (aka 4k/60hz/4:4:4/hdcp 2.2). in this world, you need the latest equipment and hope that everything is playing together perfectly to get the best picture possible. introducing a standalone roku ultra that requires its own hdmi adds another potential weak link to the chain of the signal. your hdmi cables could be slow. your receiver might be slow or defective in processing the 4k hdr signal. maybe your hdmi inputs to your tv only allows one port (out of the three inputs) to carry an hdr (basically most of the mid level samsung tvs from 2016 like my ku6300 and my KU6290F). and, don't even get me started about hdmi cec/arc. it is a commonly known issue that if you have more than one hdmi connected to your tv or receiver, your tv/receiver may start switching inputs on you unexpectedly via the CEC (consumer electronics control, which is needed in some setups).

so in this environment, in order to optimize the picture i'm watching, i'd really prefer to have the simplest system possible. that means using a streaming app that is integrated already into my tv. instead of an additional stand alone device. and the only thing that roku still has that my samsung does not is ESPN. if not for ESPN, i'd dump my standalone roku right away.

i have heard that roku's strategy is now trending to integrate into tv's, and i think that's wise of them.

I have the 40 inch KU6300. Only one HDMI takes the HDR signal? I have my 4k BD plugged into HDMI 2 and it shows that a 4k signal is being received as a movie starts playing. Forget the series doesn't have true HDR are you saying to put the BD in HDMI 1 and the cable box on HDMI 2? I have my Roku 3 on HDMI 3. I love my Roku 3! Works great. Only issue is the newly updated Disney Channel app causes a freeze when exiting and it takes about a minute for it to unfreeze. I think it's app specific. Otherwise, it's great! I feel I can get 4k apps from the tv or from the Samsung K8500. I prefer the Roku but for just the two or three apps that can stream in 4k, might as well just use the tv or BD player if the Roku 3 is still working well.

so true! i bought last year's ultra. i'm not sure if the differences are too great, as they seem to use the same processor. from a quick look at cord cutter/ youtube, seems like the main differences are the optical port, the OS (which will soon be rolled out to the 2016), and the remote.

i guess i'm mostly saying after years of buying the latest roku, i'm wary of buying another standalone device. i'm very much trying to view my video in 4k/60hz/4:4:4, but it's a lot easier to achieve that streaming through the tv's native apps than with a standalone roku.

and, once again, i was sloppy--my apologies. i messed up saying HDR instead of UHD. you're right that all the hdmi ports on our KU6300s can do HDR. but only HDMI1 will allow UHD color, which is very noticeable.

in your case, sounds like you've optimizing it perfectly, with your 4k UHD blu-ray player going into hdmi1. and if you're using a roku 3 (1080p) and your cable source (probably not uhd?) should be more than easily handled by hdmi 2 and 3. i guess the problem will only come if you upgrade to roku ultra, then have two UHD sources competing for that one HDMI1. (or we upgrade our tv to one with all UHD ports.

What store has the 2016 model for $25 for price protection purposes? Thanks.

I wonder what is the difference between a full blown ruku and the new streaming stick that will be on sale for around $50 on Thanksgiving.

The ultra has:
  • An ethernet point, for wired Internet connectivity. If you want to stream 4K content regularly this is highly recommended.
  • HDR support
  • A microSD port, which Roku says can "help speed up streaming channel load times."
  • A USB port, so you can play media from external hard drives.
  • Remote finder (press button on Roku and the remote makes a sound)

Stream Amazon Videos, Netflix, Youtube, etc.

It can play videos off of a USB storage device. As for streaming from a PC? No idea.
