So question. Is there any reason to get this over the 49" LG 4k Smart tv Wal-Mart has on Black Friday for $330? I saw people complain of the checkerboard close up issue on the TCL set which makes me think the LG would be a smarter buy

Authorized reseller? Shame if you have not warranty. IMO a better bet is from Costco.com 49" LG UJ6500.for $379 less $25 on line coupon = $354 + tax. Authorized reseller, free 2nd year warranty. The TV itself has Wide Color Gamut so to some degree true HDR10.

I've heard people go back and forward between 49" tcl and 49" LG 4k tvs. If you are a gamer, go with the tcl.

without looking at the specs I would say yes, likely the LG is only 60hz and not HDR 10. But that could be wrong..

i bought from the same seller back in early September for $319.99 (after similar 20% off coupon that maxed out at $50 off) and earned 8% back in ebay bucks (overlapping promo). it was packed very well and i added on the 2-year Assurant protection plan just in case. no tax for me in Ohio. it's not my main TV so i don't watch it all the time, but i feel like it was well worth the price i paid. i think that i remember seeing that electronics express is an authorized reseller, but please do your own research to verify if that is a concern.

i picked this TV up from Costco yesterday to replace a defective Element 4k TV and out of the box the TV was great. It looked a little bit better than the LG side by side in the store.
The problem is the TV was running 4k 60hz out of the box, no problems. After the TV updated itself I could only output 4k @ 30hz. The TV chokes on 60hz output from my computer now. I contacted TCL last night and haven't heard a response yet. Frown ...I might just suck it up and buy the LG if I don't hear back soon. Thank goodness for Costco, but I'm learning a lesson in buying cheap brand TVs. Frown

did you set hdmi 2.0 on all the hdmi ports?
select hdmi 2.0, not "auto"

The roku software updates should not bork your TV like that.

Electronic express is an authorized TCL dealer.

But you're better getting the $180 Sharp roku tv at Best Buy on Black friday.
The Sharp has a better lcd panel, made by AUO. This 49" TCL has a panel made by CSOT.

Otherwise they're both functionally identical, and the Sharp is much cheaper.

Yes, I did set it to hdmi 2.0 and when I tried to output 60hz the TV would say "no signal" or something like...effectively, no picture. When I do auto mode on the TV and output 60hz the screen is pink and green like it's a bad cable, but the cables are all brand new 4kv 60hz capable. Plus they worked just fine before the update. Similar thing happened to my Vizio a few years ago and so I'll never buy a vizio again. If I could just down grade the firmware to the original version and get 60hz again I'd be happy. The mouse and some games are laggy when it's at 30hz for some reason.

Can you tell us more? AUO panels? Does the Sharp have HDR? Is HDR noticeable much at 43" size? Thanks for additional info.

That's terrible. Hopefully they have a firmware you can upload through usb.

If I remember, there's a reset button on the TV. Try that maybe.

if that doesn't work, do the system factory reset through the roku software.

I did factory reset and no luck. BUT...
I somehow saw the HDR setting in windows display menu and tried to turn it on. I applied, but the screen and settings wouldn't show HDR on. That appears to have done something.

After that I went back to the nvidia graphics setting, put the internal scaling on "aspect ratio" on the "display" with resolution @ 3840x2160 @ 60hz. This was always the setting anyways. Then I went to "change resolution" and set it to "use default color settings" and then selected 60hz and it worked! I don't know how or why, but it works for some reason. Anyways, thanks for your help!!

YES. The LG is cheapo RGBW panel while this is proper RGB. Buy this and don't patronage the cheats at LG.
