Looking for tips on fixing iPad Air black screen - likely needs disassembly

91 32 November 14, 2017 at 03:29 AM
Hoping some electronics-knowledgeable SDers can help with this. I was recently gifted a non-working (won't power on) iPad Air. Have already tried hard reset, USB, recovery mode, nothing will power this thing on.

Battery seems to charge because eventually my charger will stop pulling when the iPad is plugged in.

I can't find any legitimate resources online for diagnosing the problem so was hoping for some help.

I have the tools and know-how to take this apart, for reference I have previously repaired several Android tablets myself (USB port replacement, battery replacement, digitizer).

Any pointers? The device is in great shape but I don't want to spend $100-200 to bring it to a repair shop. Thanks in advance!

Do you know anything about it's past? Was it dropped, Did it get wet? etc?

Yes, it was grandparent-owned Smilie and kept very neat, no damage and really never left the house. Grandparents were fine buying a new one but they let me keep the broken one in case I could fix it!

I may at least try opening it and see if anything is obviously wrong (loose wire, burn mark, smell, etc.) -- will post when I do this.

Nope, no indication when I plug in to computer with USB that anything is detected...

Probably toast then. You can open it up and see. If you have an apple store take it there, see what they say they give you the option of knowing before paying.
