This pack is meant for backpacking, where the porter is more designed for general travel. The Osprey Anti-Gravity suspension is one of the biggest differences. It spreads the load of the pack evenly across your back and hips, so it's not all bearing on your shoulders. The frame and straps on the Atmos are much beefier and more comfortable under heavy weight compared to the packable straps on the Porter.

Great deal if you don't have to pay tax. If you do, REI has the same pack about $10 bucks more [rei.com]. Great if you're an REI member (dividend) + the awesome return policy if the pack doesn't fit you properly.

You can just go to Backcountry's website and get some $back from one of those sites. Moosejaw probably has them the same price, plus some more reward

How does this compare to the porter series. It's almost 3 times the price.

Just adding my 2 cents if people are looking for a 65L bag.
I got the 65L travel bag here https://www.amazon.com/Osprey-Por...+travel+65

Even though the travel is cheaper, it is VERY UNCOMFORTABLE, HEAVY, HARD TO WALK when packed fully. I wish I could return it and get this one, but I wrote my name and crap all over it.

I got the porter, read my comment above. Would not recommend the porter, wish I got this bag instead.
Porter review:
When packed, the bags frame bulges outward, where walking in a straight line is difficult. The only way for it to be comfortable is to not fully pack it, but then it defeats the purpose.

The only advantage of the porter is the packable straps and opening like a travel bag. If that's what you want just get the smaller 30-40L travel bags, since 30-40L is about the reasonable amount I can pack the porter without having difficulty walking.

I own 8 packs currently, including the one in the OP. It has over 300 miles of it and not a stitch missing; only some minor abrasions from scrambles over granite.

Best pack ever. Might get this deal just to have another one or to give as a super-gift. Awesome deal. Also, though it's in no way a UL pack, I frankly think that the small bit of extra weight is worth the incredible comfort and smooth ride.
