Three times they tried to kill her. Then a professional was hired. So was Riyria.

When the last member of the oldest noble family in Avryn is targeted for assassination, Riyria is hired to foil the plot. Three years have passed since the war-weary mercenary Hadrian and the cynical ex-assassin Royce joined forces to start life as rogues-for-hire. Things have gone well enough until they're asked to help prevent a murder. Now they must venture into an ancient corner of the world to save a mysterious woman who knows more about Royce than is safe and cares less about herself than is sane.

From the best-selling author of The Riyria Revelations comes the third installment of The Riyria Chronicles. Although part of a series, it's designed to thrill both new readers looking for fun, fast-paced fantasy and Riyria veterans wishing to reunite with old friends. For those who do wish to experience the entire Riyria saga, two reading options exist:

Order of Publication: Theft of Swords | Rise of Empire | Heir of Novron | The Crown Tower | The Rose and the Thorn | The Death of Dulgath

Chronological Order: The Crown Tower | The Rose and the Thorn | The Death of Dulgath | Theft of Swords | Rise of Empire | Heir of Novron

I found the Riyria Revelations to be an excellent series. One of my favorite series for sure. However, the prequel series, Riyria Chronicles was just average. For one, most of the events in the prequel series are already known (through the Riyria Revelations series). Just that they are explained in detail. That spoils much of the prequel series' impact.

The prequel is really a two book series, even though they call it a three book one. This third book, 'The death of Dulgath', is a stand-alone adventure of the two heroes, set in the same universe. However, this book is not related to the main story. This makes this book the weakest link of the six books. That being said, the main characters are so good that if you've read the rest of the books, you'll probably read this anyway.

If it is a stand-alone adventure is it readable by someone who isn't familiar with the series? Free is a good price, but not if it isn't independently readable

Yes. The author test reads the books with people who have not read the other books.

Thanks, ive been needing to pick this up. I didmt wanna pay $12 for the kindle and audible combo though.

Another series that is similar and as awesome or perhaps more so is the "cycle of arawn" and "cycle of galand." The first trilogy can be had for super cheap in audible and kindle in a "boxed set."

If you liked the main series for these riyria books then i imagine you will enjoy the Galand books by Edward W Robertson. The characters are smart asses and have a similar dynamic as these guys.

So the pre-series is weak because you already know of the events because of the original series, but this one is the weakest because it isn't a story you've already been told?
