Just say "Alexa, Order a TP-Link multicolor smart bulb" on any of your Alexa devices, like echo or dot.

No hubs required for TP-Link. It connects directly to your router/access point.

No hub required... connect direct to your Wi-Fi network and setup with a mobile app... or so I read. You'll still need to get that electricity though.

If they can't work directly with a wireless router why do some use a hub?

Different radio protocols. The ones with WiFi built in are typically stand alone so no hub required.
