I don't understand why they make all these bulbs with heat sinks that go so far up the bulb. The light distribution is always horrible towards the screw in end. I've returned several in the past that looked like this.

I find this style works fine in overhead lights that point down from the ceiling. In a standard free-standing lamp, however, you are correct that the light distribution can be less than desirable.
