Um, yeah - if you want to use it as a paperweight since it won't turn on without the weight of the batteries.

How bright is this compared to my old 4 D-cell Mag-light?

Old incan Maglites are dim by today's standards. Even the older generation LED Maglites are not that bright. Usually only around 80 lumens with new batteries. This light being rated at 320 lumens will be noticeably brighter but not "3 times brighter". It's more like this flashlight will be "one mode brighter". If this flashlight is "full power" then the Maglite would be "medium power" in comparison. This is because human perception of lumens is not linear.

Suspect it's an excellent light for the money, but I have scads of flashlights. Repped.

I picked up 2 of these and they are quite nice for $10! Def better than those budget crap lights on Amazon that always show up... Anyways, they are reasonably heavy but def not as heavy as some of the older Mag lites. Worth the price 4 sure, and great for gifts! Lowe's also has 11% back for the next few days, depending on your location of course.

Have one, I think I paid more than this price. It's a very good flashlight and well built but I will not be using it unless it's an emergency situation. I have many other AA type LED flashlights that serve just fine for run of the mill stuff- even if they are not as bright. I'll be keeping it along side my shotgun mounted BLF A-6. It's too big and heavy for day to day stuff.

Probably fairly comparable, the 4d mag lights are no slouch and these aren't XML cree LEDs.

Battery life is another story.. I've compared a rechargeable 4d Maglite to a similar lumen flashlight to this deal and it wasn't much of a difference minus the yellow light vs white blue light.. the indecent mag light bulb pushes around 120 lumens without counting the loss in the reflector and lens.

I wouldn't buy this brand. I bought two that use the 2AA from the same brand at Fry's. They have never worked right. There is a loose wire or something in both of them. Only work when you smack them and then only briefly. Save your money buy something else.

Needed a flashlight and got this, along with the AAA with beam adjustment, and the head lamp. This works fine, it is heavy and the button doesn't feel right, I'd prefer to have a Maglite. This light has received no use, opting for the smaller one when needed. But, the headlamp has gotten the most use, while I was unsure about getting it. Much easier to work with your hands when you don't have to hold the flashlight.
