Cellphone Advice For VR Use

2,020 1,474 November 17, 2017 at 08:15 AM
I am trying to make a buying decision on a cellphone for my 10 year old son to use for playing VR games on. I am trying to keep prices somewhat reasonable, and so have narrowed things down to the following three choices, unless someone has other suggestions in our price range.

1) New Moto G5 Plus: $169

2) Refurb Samsung S6 Active: $159'ish

3) Used Samsung S7 Active: $259

The S7 is at the very high end of our budget, but I think the speed differences could be worth it. There is nothing worse than a cranky 10 year old who is having to deal with gaming lag killing him. However I'm not going to break the bank either.

We plan to use a Mint SIM for cellular service/data service, unless someone has a better suggestion. We can afford $15/mo for unlimited phone and text, plus 2GB of data. Adding another smartphone line to our AT&T account is $40 for the line, and $10 for smartphone data. At that price, he doesn't get a phone...

Thanks in advance for all of your help and suggestions.

PS... Sprint has ZERO coverage in our neighborhood, so that's a non-starter.

The only real option there is the S7. Moto G5 plus will support something like Google Cardboard but it won't do Daydream. The S7+GearVR would be the way to go.
Or, look at a Google Pixel (1st gen) and a Daydream headset.

Thanks for the reply and advice! Were there enough 1st Gen Pixels made to get the price point down low enough.

I see locked Pixels on Swappa for about the same price as you mentioned for the S7, but you need unlocked which on their commands about $100 more. May be you can score one locally as people upgrade over the black friday holiday? Traditionally it's been a great time to buy phones.

Honestly VR is expensive anywhere you do it, PC, Mobile, etc. I think you need to do a bit more research into this to make sure things are compatible and get a better understanding of what it costs to do VR.

No such thing as a locked Pixel. All are unlocked.

That's what I thought too but it's not what swappa lists

The Verizon Pixels are bootloader locked and cannot be unlocked but they are all sim-unlocked and will work on any carrier. A lot of people get confused by this and may list it as locked. In fact.. all Verizon phones are sim-unlocked.
