is the frame stable in case the weight is just dropped backwards on the spotters? The picture indicates it may be, but I'd like to know about someone's real life experience.

Yes it's pretty good. Can't see it on pic but on back side of post there are pegs to stack plates. With weight on them it is very solid and stable for a home rack.

Those aren't really spotters. I know in the description they probably say they are but they're way too small to be considered spotters.

They're more like a second pair of bar holders for benching, while the main ones on top can be used for squatting

Could I buy a bench and use this for bench presses too?

I bought this as the complete set with the bench also a couple black fridays ago.

The squat rank is great but I replaced the bench last year. It was problematic and the screws wouldn't stay in.

But as a beginner set this was really great and set me on the path to weight lifting.

I bought this same kit with the bench/curl bar kit from SD a few months ago for around $120 I think. Its a pretty decent squat/ bench rack. I have a olymipic bar and 300#s racked on it no problem.

I actually have a DIY wooden rack I built from plans I found online that works surprisingly well. Well - as a home gym alternative when I can't make it to the gym. Obviously wouldn't count on it from a safety standpoint and I don't throw a lot of weight on it.

There's a set that comes with a bench for that [walmart.com]. So you can always buy your own bench and do that that way.

I wouldn't trust using those small things as spotters. They are only welded at 4 points and I wouldn't trust any weight dropped on them. They are more like holders for when you can't get the weight back up, rather than a place where you can drop the weights from a height.

Link to the plans? I'd like to make my own as well

I bought this rack along with the bench for around $150 from Walmart. The rack is wobbly at times and it feels risky every time I rack my weights on it... I regret purchasing it.

I love how slick deals starts to promote crap like this. All it takes is a few thumbs up by some accomplices and bam, you got yourself a fake front page.

This is the same price all year long, folks! I watched it for a long time before going with a power rack.
