The Philips Hub that ships with this is the hub you'll want for controlling 1 through 50 Hue devices (bulbs, light strips, lamps, sensors, etc).

While both the Samsung SmartThings Home hub and the Amazon EchoPlus can control Hue lightbulbs without the Hue hub, you won't get a full range of features. Meaning if all you wish to do is buy a few white bulbs and adjust the brightness both EchoPlus and the SmarthThings Home hub can do that, but if you want full color control on the white & color bulbs then you'll want to pick up the Philips Hub.

In general I'd recommend most people buy a Philips hub, then connect your SmartThings or EchoPlus to that. That gives you the full range of features but you can also control it all centrally or via voice commands.

TL;DR:

- All Hue devices are ZigBee (a wireless protocol).
- The Philips Hub, EchoPlus and SmartThings Home are all ZigBee hubs.
- The Philips Hub is the only ZigBee hub with a full range of Hue features, other ZigBee hubs can only do "basic" things.
- You can control your Philips Hue hub from other home hubs including the popular Samsung and Amazon offerings (SmartThings Home and EchoPlus).
- You can also control your Philips Hue hub with non-ZigBee devices, such as the regular Echo inc. Dot, Google Assistant, and Cortana.

Can I get any performance improvements with replacing my old hub with v.2? My current v.1 is connected to the Wink-1 and sometimes I have issues. Not sure if I have to upgrade both hubs. Thanks!

Think I should snag this now or wait for Black Friday? Anyone have a suggestion regarding pricing trends for this in past years?

I don't understand the hub either. Two questions:

Is the hub necessary for a single bulb? I just want to use Google Home to control my bulb turning on/off and the colors

Is this a price I should jump on?

Anyone has a recommendation for a nice 2-3 bulb lamp stand for a huge bedroom?

It is confusing. Even though both hubs support zigbee radio... to use Philips hue app and bulbs you need to use a Philips hue hub even if you already have smart things.

You can use these bulbs with smartthings hub as well but you will not have much options as hue app with hue hub ....

Hue bulbs do need the Philips hue hub, which is separate from smartthings hub.

Also this price is lowest so far. Kinda cheaper than buying 3 individual bulbs only.

Is this a good deal? 3 bulbs for $120 seems to be very steep
