I don't remember when "down alternative" became the nom de jour for "polyfill" but man, did that get old, fast... I mean, polyfill is fine and good if you don't actually need the warmth of down or can't afford, or don't want, to spend the money on it. (Or you're a vegan or whatever and so don't want to use any animal product at all.) But calling it "down alternative" is like calling Trader Joe's "Tuna for Cats" "sushi-grade tuna alternative"... LMAO

Why are they so specific about what this is an alternative to?

Presumably to put the mere thought of "down comforter" in people's minds, absurdly suggesting that it's somehow, no matter how vaguely, "equivalent" to down, and so make potential buyers think on some not-quite-conscious, emotional level that it's a "great deal" because it's so much cheaper than down.

In short, "down alternative comforter" sounds much classier and "luxe" than "polyfill comforter", doesn't it? (And I'm actually not being sarcastic.Wink) The sad part is that some not-insignificant number of people probably fall for such ridiculously superficial tactics…<sigh>
