Why not get a desktop at 17". This will not be comfortable on your lap.

LOL. More comfortable than a desktop on my lap.
I have trouble fitting the desktop and monitor in my car too.
It gets worse when I have to also bring a UPS to power it.

This looks like a good deal but the Envy are plastic and I am tired of gluing the brass nuts back into the plastic frame with JB weld and pulling chunks of plastic out of the fan. I wish there was still a Latitude 17 with metal frame. There are so few 17" business laptops out there. HP has a probook but most everything else is over an inch thick and has a huge gaming video card in it and no battery life. Where is my 17" 1/2" thick ultrabook?

I'm considering this one. One question I cannot get a good answer to is if there's an open M.2 slot to which an SSD can easily be added. If anyone owns this model with the 8th gen Intel, I'd love to know which drive bays are open when getting just a regular HDD (as here) or when getting only an SSD (as offered on hp.com).

Thanks. This appears to be the previous generation, with the 7500u CPU, but I had no idea they'd make it so hard to upgrade. No reason to think the new one is better. Another video of the 2017 (previous) model notes that versions shipped with just a standard drive do not have a connector on the motherboard for a second, M.2 drive. This is consistent with what I was told over HP chat: no connectors for a second drive in units that ship without a second drive. Greedy bastards, want you to have to pay for the second drive up front. Probably kills the deal for me.

After doing a bit more research, it does appear that what the sales associate told me about the latest model was definitely true with the 2017 model: units shipped without two drives do not have a connector on the motherboard for a second drive, even though this would add only cents to the cost.

The competing Dell 7773 has an M2 connector even when ordered with just the regular HDD. And it's much easier to open up. So I guess I'll do what I've done the last two times and get a Dell.

I wish I found this thread b4 I purchased this. This is the model number, not listed on costco's webpage
https://support.hp.com/us-en/prod...l/18162283
Page 1 of the service guide states this model is in the series which supports SSD (m2)
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05282360
but this one does not Frown I opened it up and there's no slot. I had even called HP support, via Costco's consierge number asking if it would void the warranty to open it up and add an SSD. Support said no, as long as I didn't break anything. Support helped me find the model number (type "system" in search box, duh). System SKU is 2ew64ua and when you input that number in the search box at HP support . com, up comes this laptop model 17-U275CL, which is not on the webpage and costco consierge service had no clue either.
While I had HP support on the line and before I had opened up the laptop I complained that the fan was turning on too often (and was noisy) even with no applications running. We updated the BIOS and that solved that problem.
But I can't live without an SSD. This takes 50 seconds to boot up, and that's stock, without any added programs, etc.

Take the 17-u275cl back to Costco and tell them that HP is ripping them off. I had the same issue but also thought for $100 more I would try the touchscreen model 17-u273cl which has the m.2 connector.
I'm in the process of testing my Crucial MX300 275GB SATA M.2 2280SS SSD which Crucial states is the correct drive. Waiting on a M.2 to USB connector to see if it is the drive or laptop.

Update better late than never I suppose.
Got the M.2 to USB adapter and confirmed the Crucial drive was good.
I purchased a total of 5 laptops (2 17-u275cl and 3 17-u273cl) in Dec 2017 thru Jan 2018. 3 of 5 did not have the M.2 socket soldered on the motherboard. The other 2 had a socket but fit the SSD very loosely and they did not function.

After many calls with Costco concierge and HP support, I decided to send HP my last 17-u275 (no M.2 socket) as they were suppose to replace the motherboard to correct the problem. Never even powered this one on after looking at the motherboard. Had a HP coordinator call me many times in an attempt to rectify this. I even sent him the product literature to try and speed this up. While he was researching this, the technicians sent the laptop back to me citing "software fails test because of 3rd party software, reload driver". What a waste of 3 weeks.

What a SNFU with HP. They only answer questions that they want to and add tons of fluff regarding their process. I have alot of voice mail and email correspondence that are really just a load of crap and also email that should of went to other people. Spoke to the Costco GM 3 times in an attempt to get Costco's buyer to give me a call to find out why Costco is selling substandard laptops. Never heard from anyone. After looking inside the 5 laptops it became clear that perhaps I no longer was a fan of HP (missing screws, drives that were put in sloppy, screws not screwed in, etc. and have pictures of the drive issue and missing M2 connectors).

Can you confirm that the touch version,273cl, definitely has the m.2 connector and all that is involved in add an ssd is plugging it in while still being able to use the 1tb hdd? Also does the screen have piano black or matte black around it? Thank you.
