can I flip straight talk iphone to existing tracfone line

490 32 November 18, 2017 at 03:16 PM
My young son currently has a tracfone line so we can track him down. A relative said they were buying him an iPhone SE or 6 from straight talk as a gift but I would prefer to just keep the low cost option of tracfone. If I do not activate the phone on straight talk is there a way to flip it right away to his existing tracfone line/minutes?

Last I checked into this, it was not possible. Straight Talk/Tracfone are technically the same company, and although the StraightTalk iPhone is not locked in any way, the Tracfone system (and reps) won't let you switch over for a full year.

I was tempted by these SE's because of the price, but I didn't want to pay the StraightTalk plan price. So for now I'm sticking with the good old 5s and Tracfone.

Yes, as long as the sim card is the same size. The iphone uses a nano sim, so make sure his old phone has the same size. I took my old sim out of my tracfone and put it in my straight talk iphone 5s and it worked with no problem. Don't put the Straight talk sim in unless you plan on using Straight Talk.

P.S. I plan on buying the Total Wireless SE on BF and transfering my sim again.

Hold on, you simply swapped SIMs and it worked? As far as I knew, the IMEI has to match the tracfone account or whatever they have on their end. Because when you add minutes/date they add them based on the IMEI

Didn't use an IMEI , my old phone was GSM which didn't need an IMEI just the Tracfone sim number. You don't set up the phone just the sim.

This works on Tracfone ONLY with the tracfone family brands, such as Straight Talk, Total Wireless and Walmart Family Mobile ect. It wont work with a Verizon or AT&T branded phone unless it has been unlocked.

Ah, so it seems customer service has been lying to me again. They were adamant that if I got a newer (unlocked) iPhone, I can't just swap SIMs, but instead have to activate a new line and have my old number and balance ported to the new SIM card.

For some reason, I understood that the Tracfone system mates the IMEI and the SIM when they allocate minutes and data, and a mismatch will make the phone unusable.

Nope, my friend has an SE on tracfone CDMA (Verizon) and my 5s on tracfone GSM (AT&T) and we can swap sims between the two with no problems.
You said you were looking at an unlocked iPhone but the ones I'm talking about are locked to the Tracfone family. A non tracfone unlocked one I haven't tried.

My 5s came from who-knows-where eBay, but was used on the Verizon network. I made it work with Tracfone (a painful process). So, if what you are saying is true, I and the OP shouldn't have an issue using a working SIM from a tracfone to another phone from their family brands.

I guess I'll have to try it.

If you have a problem with yours due to the sim being registered to an IMEI just buy the tracfone SIM pack $1 most places, and use the cdma nano Sim in the kit. Transfer your buckets list to it, activate it using your old phone number, and pop it into your new phone. Don't register the phone at all.

Thanks for everyones help! I scored the iphone 6 straighttalk from walmart last night online so will see how things go once he opens it for xmas and try the transfer to Tracfone existing line. The former (current) phone is a andriod smart phone I bought on an HSN deal about a year ago. Fingers crossed!

Pulled my sons current phone, it is a LG Rebel L44VL on tracfone from
HSN deal and has a nano sim card in it. I received the straight talk iPhone 6 today in the mail. So do I understand correctly once he opens the iPhone at xmas I just need to pull the nano SIM card from the LG Rebel phone and put it in the brand new iPhone 6 and that should activate it on his same current tracfone line? Or do I need to call or do something online with tracfone or get another sim kit to get his number and minutes to transfer to the iPhone?
