Better use them before January. Once bankruptcy starts, cards could go invalid.

He has a point. They've been bleeding money every quarter. They've sold off several of their popular product lines, closed or closing sears Canada I believe, shutdown en masse stores in the US and vendors are requiring that they pay up front instead of offering credit terms. Its a matter of time. Buying a gift card now if you don't have an immediate purchase in mind would be ill advised.

They've been losing money for a while now, and will continue to do so for for at least a few more years. In the near future, they will still be there. So unless you plan on keeping the gift card for years, you will be fine buying a gift card now.
