Not sure where to post? But I'll try here.
Looking for the cheapest/best laptops to run minecraft its for a 9 year old, so internet and basic word processing will be other needed features.

Any suggestions?
Thanks all

Much better off finding an iPad than a cheap PC for Minecraft.

They come now with Apple's word processor plus Microsoft Word is available.

Unless I'm mistaken, minecraft is a very resource light game, so anything with an intel i5 will probably do. Let me check the game specs

Yeah anything with an intel i5 or above will be fine. Cool that he wants to get into coding so young!

Just about everybody is running an 15" i3 deal at $300. Not much difference between the Skylake (7xxx) i3 and i5 line, both are dual core. The HD 520/620 can handle Minecraft and most games at some quality.

Live now (CPU is a 6th gen, but not a big difference)

There are differences in Minecraft versions as well. If he currently plays on an ipad, he is playing PE, aka Windows 10, aka Bedrock. This is the newer version, and likely the very long term future of the game. The original Minecraft is the "java" version which was PC only.

There are some differences between the 2 versions, so knowing that is important. if he plays with friends, and currently uses the ipad, you will want to get a laptop that has windows 10, in order to run that version as you cannot cross play.

The game is significantly less resources required on the W10 version as opposed to the java version, but either are playable with fairly minimal specs.

I have played on a i5 64gb surface and it worked well. Depending on the sales, it could be a good option.

I wish there was a 14" version. I like the small HP Stream laptops almost enough for a recommendation. They'd play Windows store Minecraft fine. So limited, but I like the chassis. You can pick up used/refurbished ones for $100

This is helpful, thank you.

Both kids say they want chrome books since that's what they use at school (familiarity I guess). But looks like the cheap chromebooks won't support minecraft (?) in any form

Here is some probably wrong info:

1. Get something to run the "better together" release. It allows cross platform play and is a common release. No MacOS and no iOS apparently.
https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/B...her_Update

It is really easy to share a world on your local network with friends or family.

2. You might get a touchscreen laptop. You can use the same controls as a tablet. If you run Win10, you can readily pair an Xbox One Bluetooth controller and it works well. Kids like touchscreens and the controller will reduce the crud on the keyboard.

3. The android version lets you buy one copy and put it in the Android Family Share; 6 people in your family can play from the same copy. This works on Android directly or on an emulator (Bluestacks or Nox) in Windows.

4. Any PC will basically run Win10 Minecraft. In an Android emulator you need maybe an i5 with 4+GB or RAM.

5. Don't spend much. If yours is like mine, it will be gross and somewhat broken within 6 months. A smart move might be whatever Costco has on Black Friday with the discounted Squaretrade warranty. If he is carrying it to school, go <4lbs; if not then heavier will typically be sturdier.

Good Luck!

edit: looks like better together is on ios now also.

Old, modern (5xxx or higher) chips have better graphics. I do like refurb HP Elites but, if you haven't purchased yet, I suggest:
