Please be aware that this unit is not supported by TMobile or ASUS. I and others have run into this. I purchased due to SlickDeal Nov 2016 $55 from TMobile. WIFI intermittent and now not working at all. Since not TMobile customer TMobile says to contact ASUS. ASUS says since TM-AC1900 is TMobile unit to contact TMobile. TMobile says they are phasing them out and can not help me with warrantee repair or replacement. I called each company several times and did troubleshooting with ASUS. ASUS says probably hardware problem and to call TMobile. TMobile will not honor even with receipt and order number.

My post is not quite correct since this is a refurb and support offered by another company for 90 days. But if there may be an unusual failure rate of the dual band WIFI. Mine works fine as a wired router, just no 2.5 o 5 Gz band WIFI. Failed in less than a year.

did you convert it to the Asus firmware or ddwrt? and not that old out of date crap that is loaded on it?

Asus also has a history of using crappy wall warts, and refurbished sometimes get generic wall warts might try and after
market with a higher amp rating can sometimes work wonders.

What is the T-Mobile affiliation here? Just branding, or does it actually offer something to TMO customers?

Decent price as long as you're not stuck with faulty software.

They used to provide these for customers who had bad coverage in their homes to use for wifi calling. I think she software is slightly different than the stock one, but I know you can flash it.

T-Mobile offered these to customers outside coverage or reliable coverage for their location. It's basically the ASUS RT68-U/R/P with a custom firmware loaded to function as a T-Mobile Network Extender. You can flash the ASUS firmware instead to have basically a more expensive router for next to nothing (relatively). It's a decent deal, not earth shattering today as I've seen the RT- 68U/R/P on clearance at various retailers for as little as $59.00 on several occasions.

Pretty fast but bought a refurb around 4 months ago and it constantly reboots requiring a reboot of modem afterwards. With just the modem and internal router never disconnects just slower and only 2.4ghz range. I would not recommend it or possibly buy the extended warranty.

Not a true mesh. But you can buy multiple and use them as wireless access points (wireless APs) if they each have a wired connection to your main router (or a switch connected to your main router).

This would effectively split your house into smaller zones, helping to reduce the burden on each WiFi signal. There would, however be no "managed" roaming: that is, you are relying on each WiFi device to pick the strongest signal.

If you do this multiple-AP setup, pick the same SSID/password/security settings for each AP, but pick a different channel for each so they don't contend for spectrum.

I have this setup with few complaints.

Edit: I flashed the firmware to ASUS Merlin. I'm not sure if the stock T-Mobile branded firmware has AP-only support.

UPDATE: AiMesh on converted routers: see wiki entry. I haven't tried it though.

Using 3 of these as a managed switch (vlans) and access point in a single box. Requires third party firmware and custom scripting but works well and cheaper than buying two separate components. Tempting to get one but already have 3 and a spare.

With current asus merlin firmware, wifi speeds on 5 ghz saturate my 350 mbps pipe.

I bought this a month or so ago to replace a TP-Link dual band AC1200 that was decent in its own right, but didn't have very good 5ghz range. This router is much better than my previous. I am able to cover the entire 3 floors of my house with 5ghz signal (and 2.4 obviously) and get much higher speed on 5ghz. I have a 150mbps internet connection and I can get that speed on my cellphone whereas before I could only get 80 or so and that was if I was close to the router. Now, even in the worst locations in the house I will get over 100mbs. Hasn't had to be unplugged or rebooted once so far using the included firmware.
