Was looking at another Nikon refurb on the Nikon site, and that ALSO has a 90-day warranty.

Really, I don't think I will entertain the notion of buying Nikon refurbs when Canon offers a year on their own. Different situation when new and post-warranty used, but for OEM-refurbshed stock this is a glaring disparity that makes Nikon look faithless in their ferubs.

The tele kit lens is ED not VR(Stabilized).

AF-S or AF-P on both lenses? (Both are AF-P.) Because without the newer more quiet focusing video auto focus is noticeable and distracting to watch. Great for stills and even the perhaps best value; if you don't do video or mind pulling your own focus manually for pro video results. Set to 24p usually and when you do not want slow mo from higher frame rates.

There's also the issue of primes being better (staying closer to lowest ISO where the quality like color sensitivity lives) in more situations. Even though primes sometime compensate for not having stabilization (with faster shutter due to wider aperture) never the less be aware not all lenses have stabilization or video quiet AF-P.

A faster (wider aperture maximum) prime lens (usually not stabilized mechanically) is capable of getting faster shutter speeds (so less blur hand-held) in more challenging lower lighting (nice match with the generally great sensor here) where as a lens with stabilization lets you shoot slightly lower shutter speeds; but at a higher/worse ISO due to less light in from typically smaller typical maximum apertures. Especially at the long end of zooms
Most primes also cost less, are smaller and weight less including their typically faster apertures. "Zooming" with your feet actually has advantages; while your getting everything else "right" at the same time. Primes have a moving range of sorts; such that 2 or three primes arguably is all you'd ever need. For those who do not wish to buy numerous lenses.

So whether you usually take video or usually take stills then this may determine the best lenses for you. Plan wisely. I'd say avoid the high cost lenses.

I think the manufactures purposely fail to combine what is possible to combine. Which has nothing to do with some things that are not possible to combine. At least yet.

All that said you can get excellent video here anyway. Minor issues have to be worked around due to this actually being mostly optimized for stills. Therefore not bad at all(best value of all); but you need to understand what your getting here and the quietness role AF-P plays .

Addendum: Warranty could be better but I've never had a problem with refurbs.

If only available primes had quieter auto focusing for video too.

Nothing wrong with using one prime and one zoom as all your lenses. Maybe I'll go kit lens and 85mm prime. Ultra tele is overrated and best here for birds in full sun; which you might bait them close-up instead anyway (even with 85mm x1.5 prime and more light conditions). The smaller 50mm (x1.5) prime is also a best value portrait lens here (fun to reverse macro some too).

The D3400 flash is weaker (thus its better battery rating) than the D3300 and this would put you at uglier ISO in just some auto-fill conditions. If you never plan on adding another flash (bounce, brighter, fast successive flashes) then this might be of concern to you.

Nikon tele kit zooms are excellent and preferred portraits (stabilized close-ups with bokeh via tele focal length) except for low light and carry size. Do you see what I mean? Flash only goes so far out and does not light distant backgrounds where faster primes rule. Ahh the tradeoffs. You must force yourself not to buy a zillion lenses. That means pick your poison based on most usage. Nikon does not make that easy!

Heads up for Black Friday as Nikon (at authorized dealers) has the D3400 with kit lens at $399.99. The kit lens is a rock solid performer and the P lens 70-300 is outstanding. Keep a eye on eBay for new or new takeoff lenses as the 70-300 is often bundled and some people don't need. I picked up mine (no IS) for $120. new. They are silent, fast to focus, and sharp at all focal lengths.

Image shot with the 70-300, non IS lens at 240mm,

It is strange that they still only give the 90 day warranty, but all my Nikon gear I bought refurbished and it always was in new condition (sans the white box) and I've never had an issues.

Many times this is listed for this price almost year back. Not a deal unless it's $299

I wish I was capable enough to do a script and get every single item on sale on ebay right now with a buy it now price over $75 and do thousands of posts that are all covered by one single thread - namely a $15 off $75+ ebay coupon thread.

But hey, why do that when there's a gazillion people out there who will do that for us just fine. At least deal editors should know better.

If it was a truly slow day perhaps, but with black friday and cyber monday clutter is definitely not needed.

Nice price for a great camera! I bought a refurbished D3300 last year from Adorama. Repped from this site. I love it. Great camera.

Had the 70-300 been the VR. Deal would been Great. On a light body D3400, VR is a Must have with a long telephoto lens. Still a good deal.
